Central Texas football coach arrested in online child sex sting, barred fro

HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas (KWTX) A teacher at the Union Grove Middle School in Harker Heights who also is the 7th grade football and basketball coach has been arrested in an online child sex sting operation.

Hamilton County Sheriff Justin Caraway says "46 year old year old David Anthony Balsinger was picked up Thursday at his school, Union Grove Middle school in Harker Heights, for an Online solicitation of a minor charge, a 3rd degree felony."

According to the Arrest Complaint, Balsinger used the KIK mobile app to "entice children to send sexually explicit photos and or videos of themselves." The formal arrest complaint alleges that Balsinger would learn the real age of the child and continue to solicit explicit material from her.

According to Sheriff Caraway, his department had set up an account in which Balsinger thought he was talking to a 15 year old girl in Evant.During the exchanges of messages between Balsinger and investigators posing as the teenage girl, the arrest complaint states, "Balsinger identified himself as 45 years of age and a teacher and a coach in Killeen."

The arrest complaint also states "Balsinger identified that he had two children ages 19 and 17." Balsinger then asked if the girl whom he thought to be 15 was seeing any boys.

The complaint alleges that "on September 19th, Balsinger told the girl he had a football game that evening." and later close to game time Balsinger asked the 15 year old girl to send him a picture of her (private part). The formal complaint also details that Balsinger was in communication with the girl for nearly 16 hours the day he coached the football game on Tuesday.

Sheriff Caraway told KWTX his department interviewed Balsinger at Union Grove Middle School Wednesday in Harker Heights where the teacher admitted to enticing the young teenage girl to send him nude photographs of her private part, and said he knew that it was wrong. The arrest complaint also states "Balsinger agreed he committed a crime by soliciting nude photographs of the child and communicating with the child in a sexually explicit manner."

Balsinger, who is married, is the science teacher at Union Grove Middle School and is also the coach of the 7th and 8th grade Soccer teams.

The arrest complaint was signed by Justice of the Peace James Lively in Hamilton County shortly after noon on Thursday.

KISD officials released following statement to KWTX on Balsinger's arrest.

"Killeen ISD placed David Balsinger, a teacher and coach at Union Grove Middle School, on administrative leave and barred him from access to KISD schools on Thursday after learning of a pending Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department investigation into an allegation of online solicitation of a minor. The case does not involve a Killeen ISD student.“The Killeen Independent School District requires teachers and all employees to maintain the highest standards of conduct and will never tolerate illegal or inappropriate behavior by an employee toward any child. We are saddened and outraged by this alleged conduct by one of our teachers. We will work closely with law enforcement officials in this matter, and if the allegations prove true, we will support the strongest possible legal action against this teacher,” Superintendent John Craft said.

"Balsinger has taught and coached at Union Grove since 2007. He started work for KISD as a substitute teacher in 1990, became a teacher aide in 1991, served again as a substitute teacher from 1992-1996, and then began his full-time teaching career in 1997 at Clear Creek Elementary, where he worked for six years. He taught at Mountain View Elementary for four years beginning in 2003 before joining Union Grove Middle in 2007."
