WACO, Texas (KWTX) A popular Waco area restaurant’s doors were closed Wednesday by state officials after the business failed to pay nearly $283,000 in back taxes.

“Warning, this property has been seized for nonpayment of taxes owned the state of Texas,” a notice posted Wednesday on the door of the Mexicano Taqueria Grill & Bar in China Spring reads.

An enforcement officer with the Texas Comptroller’s Office carried out the seizure with the assistance of Waco police, Comptroller’s Office spokesman Christopher Bryan said.

Bryan called the sum the restaurant owes fairly substantial.

Officials, he says, “try to work with businesses and taxpayers to bring them into compliance depending on their history with the office.”

A seizure comes only after efforts to collect back taxes fails.

If the restaurant’s owners fail to pay up or work out a payment plan with the state within three weeks, the Comptroller’s Office can start the liquidation process, Bryan said.
