If you didn’t get your fill of burgers over the holiday weekend, today is a good day for a burger.
The burger, as we've come to know it, is long believed to have been invented in Seymour, Wisconsin, in 1885 by a man named Charles R. Nagreen who got the idea to smash a meatball between two pieces of bread and then sold it at the Seymour Fair. Here are some other juicy burger facts for today:
- Americans consume more than 40 billion burgers a year – many of which were likely eaten over the Memorial Day weekend.
- The world’s largest commercially-available burger, weighing in at 1794 pounds, is on the menu at Mallie's Sports Grill & Bar in Detroit.
- McDonald's sells about 750 burgers per second.
- Seattle eats more burgers than any other city.
- The most popular burger topping is cheese, of course, specifically American cheese – which edges out cheddar.
- White Castle, which is America's oldest burger chain, was founded in 1921.
- More than half of sandwiches sold around the world are burgers.
