Father’s Day is coming up soon (June 15th) and in honor of the holiday, a new survey highlights how many people see their own dad as a hero. Our dads are happy to lend a helping hand, offer advice and teach us what we need to know, which is part of the reason that 70% of respondents say their dad is one of their greatest mentors in life.
According to the poll of 2-thousand American adults:
- A quarter (25%) say their dad is the person they call first when they need help or support in a stressful situation.
- For 17%, their dad is the person they go to most for advice.
- Nearly a third (29%) have called their dad for help in the last week.
- Fathers have come to their kids’ rescue in all kinds of ways, including helping them get through a breakup (19%), making a rent payment their kid couldn’t afford (22%), and figuring out their life goals (30%).
- They teach us lots of practical skills, too, like driving (49%), fixing things around the house (43%), and how to change a tire (31%).
- Dads also help us learn problem solving (47%), how to make a good impression (37%), how to stand up for ourselves (38%) and how to be our best selves (32%).
- Some guys who grew up with a dad also learned how to tie a tie from him (32%), and even used their shaving cream when they were young (29%).
- People also credit their dads with teaching them the importance of maintaining their physical (40%) and mental health (30%), along with the value of splurging on yourself from time to time (28%).
Heroic acts dads have done for their kids include:
- “He donated his kidney to me”
- “He paid off my credit card”
- “During Hurricane Harvey, he trudged through the waters to come get me”
- “He stopped working and took care of me when I had a car accident”
- “He worked several jobs in order to be able to afford to put me in college so I won't have to get so many student loans.”
