Why Hummingbirds Are Skipping Your Yard

It feels like everyone's yard is filled with hummingbirds except for yours. If you've had that thought, we're here to help. There are some common mistakes you could be guilty of, which is why the colorful creatures aren't coming to you. What are these mistakes? Here are some common reasons as to why hummingbirds may be ignoring your yard.

  •  You don't have enough feeders. Try setting out more feeders! Hummingbirds are very territorial, which means you may have one guarding territory at your feeder and not allowing others to visit it.
  • You have outdoor pets. If you have a dog, they could temporarily startle hummingbirds. On the flip side, cats, especially an outdoor car, can deter birds.
  • The nectar has gone bad. Food for hummingbirds is basically just sugar water, and that could actually go bad. Because of this, you should regularly be replacing the food. Be sure to clear your feed every time you switch out the food, too, because both bacteria and mold can grow.
  • Your feeder is hidden. Hummingbirds prefer to feed in open areas, so be sure that your feeder is somewhere open. It should have a mix of sun and shade, too, and be easily seen.
  • You have a bee or wasp problem. Both bees and wasps deter hummingbirds from feeders because they compete for food. Stings from them could be harmful - and even fatal - to the birds.
