It’s National Cheeseburger Day! Here Are The Deals

On National Cheeseburger Day, let the debate begin …

  • Who has the best cheeseburgers and why?
  • What are the appropriate toppings for a cheeseburger?
  • 70% of people say they prefer American cheese on their cheeseburgers, over cheddar (59%), Swiss (40%), and mozzarella (39%). 
  • A recent YouGov poll ranks the cheeseburger the nation's sixth most popular meal. 

Here are some of the places offering special deals today:

  • Wendy's: Get a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger for just a penny with any purchase made through the app.
  • Burger King: Royal Perks customers get a free cheeseburger with any purchase of $1 or more. (Deals continue through Sept. 21).
  • McDonald's: 50-cent double cheeseburgers when you order exclusively through the McDonald’s app.
  • Whataburger: Free fries or onion rings of any size on Sept. 18 when they purchase a #5 (aka a Bacon & Cheese Whataburger). The offer is valid in the app or website.
  • Carl's Jr: My Rewards members can get 50% off Western Bacon Cheeseburger with any Large Fountain Drink purchase on Sept. 18. The single-use offer can be redeemed in restaurant or in the chain’s app/website.
  • Red Robin: Big Yummmm Burger Deal for $9.99 gets you’re a gourmet cheeseburgers with a bottomless sides along with bottomless soda, iced tea or lemonade. It’s only available for dine in.
  • Denny’s: Get 20% off any burger and is good for dine in and online orders. 
  • Sonic: Get a free Double Sonic Smasher burger with the purchase of another on Sept. 18 while ordering in the Sonic app.

Some Cheesy Facts:

  • Pasadena, California, considers itself the birthplace of the cheeseburger. A 16-year-old named Lionel Sternberger, who worked at his father's sandwich shop, The Rite Spot, got the idea to place a slice of American cheese on a hamburger patty. 
  • With all due respect to Sternberger and Pasadena, a restaurant called Kaelin's in Louisville, Kentucky, is credited with being the first to call the sandwich a "cheeseburger" in 1934. 
  • In 1935, the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver trademarked the term "cheeseburger."
