Do you dream of the days when getting up and going to work are a thing of the past? We don’t mean working from home or taking vacation days, we’re talking the real deal - retirement. While some people absolutely love what they do and can’t imagine a life without their career, new research suggests many are hoping to turn in their badge and collect their last paycheck much earlier than the average retirement age.
According to a new survey of 2-thousand employed adults, they’d like to escape the rat race at an average of 53. Inflexibility, horrible bosses and a lack of job satisfaction are the biggest reason folks are longing to get out.
- But 22% long for a career that’s more active, so they’re not stuck in front of a screen all day. And 38% would like a mix of the two.
- Women are ready to make their career exit sooner, about a quarter (24%) want to be done by the time they’re 50.
- Nearly a third (31%) admit they’re worried their employer will make them return to the office full time in the future, making them give up working from home.
- More than half (53%) of those polled say they’ll pursue a career that supports their physical and mental health better in the future.
- Having kids has led to a change in priorities for 80% of parents, who now want to find a career that works better for them.
- Half (49%) want to spend more time with their family, 48% need more flexible hours and 27% would prefer being closer to home or childcare.
- Only 38% of the women surveyed feel “empowered” in their current role, compared to 47% of men. In the future, 44% of women would like to be their own boss.
