Things 90s Teens Did That Gen Z Doesn't

Netflix’s new sitcom “That ‘90s Show” is inspiring nostalgia as it takes viewers back a few decades to the days of pagers and flare jeans. The show is a spin off of “That ‘70s Show,” following the kids of the original cast’s characters and it shows us just how different things were for teenagers back in the ‘90s than they are for teens today.

These are a few things that teens in the 1990s did all the time that modern teenagers will never experience, for better or worse:

  • Leave the house without a phone - Young people aren’t leaving the house without their phone these days unless it’s to take a “mental health walk.” But three decades ago, kids walked around with no portable device in hand, just a watch to tell them when to be home.
  • Memorize your bestie’s phone numbers - Back then, we had to memorize our BFF’s home phone numbers - or landline - so we could call them from anywhere we were. Now our phones store thousands of numbers, eliminating the need for us to know phone numbers by heart.
  • Standing in line for CD releases or concert tickets - You had to be patient to get your hands on these things in the old days, before the Internet made them accessible with a few clicks.
  • Displaying those CDs in a tower - Everyone had CD stands to show off their sweet music collections in the 90s, and now teens’ music libraries exist on Spotify and Apple Music.
  • Buy a whole album for just one song - Before there was Napster, Spotify or YouTube, if songs weren’t released as a single, the only way to hear it anytime you wanted was to buy the whole album.
  • Spend Saturdays at the mall - Even if you didn’t have any money to shop with, going to the mall with your friends was the best way for teens to meet up with friends and hang out. Buying clothes online just isn’t the social activity that 90s teens got at the mall.
  • Making a romantic mixtape - Was there anything better than getting a mixtape from your crush? Sure, today’s teens can make playlists for each other, but those don’t come with customized tape covers and personal messages for added romance.
