We’re now officially 38 days from Spring, and a nice road trip is an exceptional way to welcome in the new season. Any successful road trip begins and ends with you taking steps to get through it safely without injury to yourself, your friends, or your crap getting swiped. Here are some steps every road-tripper should take to get things moving in the right direction.
- Sunscreen –Buy it. Wear it. Live it. Even when you’re driving, that sun beating down on the window can do more damage than you realize. It’s an easy way to keep yourself from accidentally becoming painfully miserable.
- Bumper Stickers –If you’re covering your car with stickers from all the places you’ve been, then you’re also telling potential thieves it’s likely there are electronics and valuable gear they might be interested in taking a peek at.
- Night Stops –Most gas stations and truck stops are well lit and safe, but why chance it. Apersonal alarmis cheap, fits on a key ring, and loud enough to get some attention if things get weird.
- Secret Storage –If you stop to get some hiking or camping in, designate a special spot to store the valuables. It can’t be obvious or easy to get to. Any thief who busts into your car wants an easy score. Don’t help them.
- Pepper Spray –Just like the personal alarm, this stuff is cheap, easy to carry, and will mess with the vision and sinuses of just about anyone who thinks you’re an easy mark.
- Key Hiding Places –If you must hide your keys on the outside of the vehicle, don’t do it in the obvious places. The gas cap, trailer hitch, and wheel well magnets are the first place they’ll look.
- Finally, this one should be the most obvious, but is always ignored, for some reason. If you can hold off, post pics of your adventure when you get back from your trip. If someone sees your posts online, thinks your away, and tries to use it as an opportune time to bust into your house and steal your goods, you can thwart their thievery!
