Taylor Swift & The Weeknd Win Big At The AMAs

The 2020 American Music Awards went down last night in Los Angeles with Taylor Swift winning the night’s biggest award, Artist of the Year. During her speech she confirmed to fans that she wasn’t at the show because she was busy re-recording all her old music in the studio where she originally recorded the albums, noting “it’s been amazing and I can’t wait for you to hear it.”

Taylor also won two other awards, Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock and Favorite Music Video for “cardigan,” extending her current record for the most AMA wins of all time to 31.

The night’s other big winner was The Weekend, who took home three awards, winning Favorite Male Artist – Soul/R&B, as well as Favorite Album – Soul/R&B for “After Hours” and Favorite Song – Soul/R&B for “Heartless.” He did look a little worse for wear though, spending the entire evening with his face bandaged up, part of the persona he created in his music videos.

  • Other multiple winners included: Justin Bieber, who picked up three (thanks to two awards for his Dan + Shay collaboration “10,000 Hours); Dan + Shay, who also picked up three awards, and Doja Cat, BTS and Megan Thee Stallion, who each picked up two.Click herefor the complete winners list.
  • As or the show itself, Taraji P. Henson opened the telecast with a number that had her dancing and shaking her booty to Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,”MeganThee Stallion’s “Savage,” Cardi B’s “WAP” and more, and then used her speech to urge folks to come together, noting, “we need to heal. We need to love on each other a little more.”
  • Unlike some other shows, the AMAs did have an audience, although they were all the way up in the balcony, and consisted of groups of families, all wearing masks, and sitting socially distanced, with Taraji noting that everyone got tested prior to the show.

Of course the AMAs were jam-packed with performances with some of you’re favorite artists taking the stage. Among last night's performances:

  • The show kicked off with a world premiere performance featuring Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber. It started with Justin sitting in front of a mirror and performing “Lonely,” which was followed by “Holy,” featuring a large troupe of face-mask wearing dancers. It then ended with Shawn on guitar joining Justin for their newly released collaboration “Monster.”
  • But that wasn’t the only taste of Shawn we got. He later returned for a soaring performance of “Wonder," that started on a living room set, and ended with him on stage and backed by his band.
