People Are Booking Airbnbs In Ukraine As A Way To Send Funds

People looking for ways to help Ukrainians are booking stays at Ukrainian Airbnbs as a way to send money to the hosts. Following Russia’s invasion of the country, support from around the world has been pouring into Ukraine. But some folks are concerned that organizations collecting money may not be the best or most direct way to help those in need. So in a clever method of support being shared on social media, people are making reservations to stay at Ukrainian Airbnbs with no intention of actually going there, just as a way to get money directly to the Ukrainian hosts.

The idea is spreading quickly on social media and has caught the attention of Airbnb management, who has decided to waive fees so more of the money goes directly to the hosts. A spokesperson for the company says they won’t be profiting from these charitable bookings. As we recently told you, the company is also providing free short-term housing for up to 100-thousand refugees leaving Ukraine.

Patty Hartmann, a German national living in the US, who booked a stay at a Ukrainian Airbnb as a way to give directly to an affected Ukrainian, says she received a grateful response from the host. "Being able to give to someone immediately, I just know they could use the funds with how devastated they are over there with everything going on," she says.
