The final pre-release estimates are in, and experts think “Top Gun: Maverick” is going to be the best worldwide opening of Tom Cruise’s career. The movie has a 97% certified fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and industry insiders say the movie should have a $180-million opening weekend worldwide - with upwards of $100M in North America along.
That would also be a record for Cruise, whose biggest career box office openings may be surprising to some; the largest three-day weekend total in America was $64.8M for 2005’s “War of the Worlds,” and Cruise’s biggest worldwide opening was $172.3M for “The Mummy.”
In all, 62 foreign markets are expected to bring an estimated $80M opening weekend overseas, with the film already in theaters in France, Belgium, Egypt, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Philippines.
- The movie is hitting some North American screens today in previews; it’s booked at 4,727 theaters, which may be the widest release ever, beating the 4.725 theaters that saw the release of 2019’s “The Lion King.”
