Today is World Bartender Day

February 24th is World Bartender Day! They are bringers of joy, accidental therapists and they’ve been around forever. Literally. Bartending traces its roots back to the Asian, Roman and Greek eras where a majority of bartenders were innkeepers or alehouse owners who brewed and produced their own liquor.

In 1800s, however, one Jeremiah “Jerry” Thomas established the image of the bartender as a creative professional. Considered as the Father of Bartending due to his work in popularizing cocktails across the United States has been considered revolutionary – as developed elaborate and flashy techniques of mixing cocktails, sometimes while juggling bottles, cups and mixers.

As a young man, he learned bartending in New Haven, Connecticut before heading to California during its mid-19th century Gold Rush. By 1851, he came back East – opening several saloons in New York City...though he often found himself on the road teaching his trade. In 1862, Thomas finished “Bar-Tender's Guide” (alternately titled “How to Mix Drinks” or “The Bon-Vivant's Companion”), the first drink book ever published in the United States.
